The eruption of Mount Vesuvius lasted about 19 hours.
Apparently, the people of Pompeii didn't die from suffocation as the ash cloud descended upon the city. Inside the cloud, it was over 900 degrees!
Much of what we know about Vesuvius's eruption came from the writings of Pliny the younger.

I looked up some images on Pompeii and saw there were some people who looked like they were praying. I think this person was in that pose because they were praying that when they died they would be in a happier place, somewhere that's not covered in TWENTY feet of ashes!!! Another interesting fact, before the deadly volcano, Pompeii was 500 meters away from the sea, but after the eruption, the moved 2 kilometers closer to sea level!

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius was 3 times as big as the 1980 eruption of Mount Saint Helen's. It covered the entire city in ash (no wonder it took them so long to find this whole city). Twenty minutes before the eruption, there was a small rumble. Everybody heard it but ignored it.

Archaelogists who studied the site found a lot of things that told about life in Rome. For instance, one of the slaves they found looked like she was treated very poorly. They could tell by her teeth and her bones. She was trying to protect a baby from a rich family from being killed, but they both died.

    2. They had bread and cheese for breakfast with maybe a little leftover vegetable.
    3. Fans of gladiator fights fought each other like we do today. One fight of two groups from different cities (Pompeii and Nocera) caused several deaths.

Fact 3: The cloud of ash reached almost 19 miles high above the volcano.
Our thoughts: We think that for the Pompeii must have been covered with so much ash that the archeologists didn’t even realize it was there. From far away it must have just looked like ground. We think that a lot of people must have dies because it lasted for two days so a lot of people can die in two days. Also if you think about it some many people die in tornados and those last such a short amount of time so a two day volcano must kill a lot of people.
